WASMO (Water and Sanitation Management Organization) SWATI is working with the WASMO Program of the Government of Gujarat to achieve drinking water security and habitat improvement by empowering communities to manage their local water sources, drinking water supply, and environmental sanitation. It also empowers the rural community through the creation of the Pani Samiti (Village Water and Sanitation Committee). SWATI is once again trying to ensure women’s active involvement in the resource development process of the village. Therefore, the committee has a minimum of 50 percent of women membership to plan, approve, implement, operate and maintain the water supply systems, to manage water resources, and to ensure a safe and reliable drinking water supply throughout the year. This program has been undertaken with the Government of Gujarat in order to: Improve the accessibility to safe and sufficient drinking water, and water for house hold use through setting up a community managed water use and distribution system that takes into account long term sustainability and quality in uses Create awareness and develop water supply and sanitation systems at the village level including developing and capacity building of the local institutions (Pani samiti) that can monitor and maintain the water resource management systems, structures (physical and social infrastructures). |

Women
Marching Ahead for Safe and Clean Drinking Water SWATI coordinated and actively participated in a campaign on building awareness on sustainable drinking water systems. The campaign aimed at creating mass awareness and advocating with the government to invest its resources in developing sustainable and rechargeable water supply systems, instead of the present ground water impounding approach. SWATI has taken special strides to ensure that women are heavily involved in the campaign to bring clean drinking water into their villages. They have been given leadership roles to mobilize their communities and pave the way for obtaining clean water in their communities. |
